Mr. Mohamad El-Hout (BA '81, MBA '84) Chairman-Director General of MEA was elected recently as a member of the IATA (International Air Transport Association) Board of Governors representing Middle East and North Africa region.
The IATA Board of Governors consists of 31 members out of 275 airlines representing almost 85% of the international traffic in the world. The Board of Governors is the highest governance body in IATA after its General Assembly. It provides strategic guidance for the airline industry as a whole and is entrusted with overall oversight of the activities of IATA.

Sukaina Al-Nasrawi (BS ’02, MS ‘07) receives the Gold Award of the (UN-ESCWA) for “Advancing Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women”

She effectively participated in a series of gender related activities, including a system-wide gender audit, all staff capacity assessment, the evaluation of the UN-ESCWA organizational culture and the development of the UN-ESCWA gender marker. She also designed and delivered training material to build the capacity of the UN-ESCWA gender focal points network on the use of the latest technologies to visualize and analyze Gender Statistics. This has positively contributed to the commission’s efforts towards the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Salma Dannawi Oueida (BE AUB) was appointed as Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations
She will be responsible for managing the Alumni Relations Office in Beirut, in addition to her fundraising responsibilities as a senior fundraiser. In addition to her fundraising skills, Salma has been filling the role of Interim Director of Alumni Relations since December 2015, and has been managing the relationship with the WAAAUB leadership, and implementing the numerous AUB-led alumni events in Beirut. Salma Oueida is an excellent ambassador of the Institution and she represents AUB at its very best.
Samar Diab Rouhana (BA '95, MA '99) was apointed as Director of Human Resources at AUB Campus
Samar has been serving as the Interim Director of HR on Campus since January 2014. Under her management, Samar’s team has implemented the online application for leave requests and has been instrumental in instituting changes in the Group Life Insurance Policy. She has led the effort to improve the work permit process and communications with the Ministry of Labor. Samar and her colleagues have been engaged in the implementation of the new HR/Payroll system to provide AUB with a solid platform for these very critical functions.

Dr Yasmine El Masri was awarded a prestigious and competitive one-year ESRC GCRF postdoctoral fellowship during which she will be leading a project entitled: ‘Using interactive tasks to reduce the language barrier: Widening access to science education for Syrian refugees in Lebanon’.
Prof. Niveen Khashab (BS Chemistry ’02) is among the recipients of the 2017 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award.
Prof. Khashab is an Associate Professor of Chemical Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2006. Professor Khashab's has also received the Crow award for organic innovation in 2006 and AlMarai award for excellence in nanotechnology in the Middle East region in 2013. She has more than 60 publications in high impact journals.

Lebanese graffiti and street artist Yazan Halawani (BE '15) has been commissioned by Swiss luxury watchmaker Tag Heuer to design the first ever Arabic face for its Connected watch. The Arabic watch-face design was launched last week in Dubai and will only be available for sale in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Dalal Haldeman, Ph.D., M.B.A., (BS '72, MS '75)  has been named senior vice president of marketing and communications for Johns Hopkins Medicine. As VP of JHM marketing and communications for the past eight years, Haldeman achieved greater name recognition for the institution, streamlined JHM’s Web content while increasing its social media presence, and enhanced system integration while raising awareness about JHM biomedical discoveries. An advocate for engaging employees and putting patients at the forefront, she initiated sharing a patient story at every Johns Hopkins Medicine town hall meeting.

Battlefield Architecture
Khaled Malas (BAR '05) designed a electricity producing windmill being used in war-torn Syria. The windmill was recently featured at the Marrakech Biennale. Malas collaborated on the project with fellow AUB alumni Salim al-Kadi (BAR '04), Alfred Tarazi (BGD '04) and Jana Traboulsi (BGD '00).

Dr Lina Khatib to head Middle East and North Africa Programme
Chatham House is pleased to announce that Dr Lina Khatib (BA '98) has joined the institute as head of the Middle East and North Africa Programme. She joins Chatham House from her position as a senior research associate with the Arab Reform Initiative. Previously, she was director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut and, prior to that, the co-founding head of the Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law.

Dr Mustafa Abu-Lisan appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London
AUB alumnus Dr Mustafa Abu-Lisan (BS '73) has been appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. The Deputy Lieutenants of London are distinguished residents who either have served the local community, or have a history of service in other fields.
Fouad Abd-El-Khalick named new dean of UNC-CH School of Education
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced that AUB alumnus Fouad Abd-El-Khalick (BS '91, MA '95) has been selected as the new dean for the School of Education, one of the oldest professional schools at Carolina. He is currently the associate dean for research and research education in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
Artist May Wahab Ya-Ya (BFA '12) sees change in work after birth of son
A little more than a year ago, Albert Lea artist May Ya-Ya gave birth to her son, Daniel. After a few months passed, she said she felt like she was in a phase where she was stuck in life, until one day when her son was about 5 months old, she woke up, put Daniel in his playpen and began to paint.
Zeina Karam appointed AP's Beirut bureau chief
Zeina Karam (BA '96), who has reported on political upheaval, war and transformation in the Middle East for almost two decades, has been named as Beirut bureau chief for The Associated Press, leading coverage of Lebanon as well as the devastating conflict in Syria.

AUB alumnus and cofounder of Blue Cloud Ventures Rami Rahal (BE '08) has been named one of ‪Forbes‬'s ‪30 Under 30‬ in the field of venture capital.

Lebanon awarded at London Fashion Week
‘Blueprint Beirut’ an exhibition by The Starch Foundation and its ‎AUB‬ alumna co-founder Tala Hajjar (BA '99) won the Curator Award at Fashion Utopias, the British Council and British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase 2016 in association with London Fashion Week.

Dr. Radwan Massoud (BS '10), who is currently a research fellow at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, has launched “What’s Up Doc” with a group of fellow experts to provide affordable and easily attainable healthcare access to Lebanon’s refugees.
